Our story

From combat boots,
to conservation boots.

In the field

VWRA wasn't planned in a boardroom. It was rebuilt in the bush, by veterans who refused to walk away from a mission — even after the organization they served under was dismantled by fraud.

This is how we got here, and why we're still here.

The work continues every day in the Eastern Cape: standing watch over endangered wildlife, training the next generation of South African rangers, and showing up for the communities that make conservation possible.

From Soldiers to Conservation Warriors

"The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why. — Mark Twain"

Tactics. Trauma medicine. Leadership under pressure. Exactly what the bush demands every day. For our team, this isn't a second career — it's a continuation of service, with a new enemy: poaching, habitat loss, and the slow erasure of irreplaceable species.

Purpose Is the Most Powerful Medicine

"The wound is the place where the Light enters you. — Rumi"

They came home carrying what doesn't show on an X-ray. PTSD, moral injury, traumatic brain injury, the quiet weight of friends who didn't make it back.

The bush gives back what war took. Standing watch over a black rhino calf at first light. Mentoring a young South African ranger. Standing shoulder-to-shoulder with brothers and sisters again. Building something that will outlast you. Deployment after deployment, we've learned the same thing — purpose heals.

Protecting What Can't Protect Itself

"The greatness of a nation can be judged by the way its animals are treated. — Mahatma Gandhi"

This is the work, every single day. VWRA veterans support anti-poaching operations, train and mentor South African field rangers through our partnership with ECODA (the Eastern Cape Occupational Development Academy), run black rhino monitoring on the Eastern Cape's protected reserves, and contribute to cheetah meta-population work that keeps isolated populations genetically viable.

Seven years in. Zero poaching. Triple the rhinos. Our partner reserve has recorded zero poaching incidents and tripled its black rhino population — proof that this model works when veterans, rangers, and donors stand together.

The team in the field

These are the veterans, conservationists, and operators carrying the work forward — and the partners around the world who make it possible.
